The last couple of weeks have been a little…shall we say crappy? Nothing devastating or serious, just one of those runs where life throws you a few balls of crap seemingly all at once, making life just a little more difficult than usual. But when you’re fuelled with those unpredictable hormones, even running out of milk can make you feel like the entire planet is against you. Those pesky hormones.
Reaching the 30 week pregnancy milestone has come around so quickly. Probably down to the fact that I’ve been so preoccupied with ‘the balls of crap’, that it seems to have crept up on me. One crappy ball in particular was that a few weeks ago I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Just great. I can’t say that I dealt with the news like a grown up. Instead I cried for most the day giving myself a nosebleed at one point. It wasn’t a pretty sight. I was so peeved that my pregnancy would now take on a different course, particularly as I’ve been working so hard to keep myself and baby healthy. Apart from the odd Nutella indulgence, I’d pretty much been on the healthiest diet ever- trying to ensure that I didn’t turn into Ten Ton Tessie during my pregnancy. But clearly my body had other plans.
The Midwife reassures me that gestational diabetes is fairly common in pregnancy. I’ll never win the lottery but I’ll sure as heck score a seat for the 18 out of 100 pregnant women who get gestational diabetes…and don’t even get me started on the 1 in 100 who have coeliac disease! Lucky me. But now that I’ve got over my initial hormonal break down, I’m finally seeing things in a more positive light. If this is the worst thing that happens during my pregnancy then we are doing pretty damn well. Apart from monitoring my blood four times a day, managing a super-low sugar diet with the help of some medication, baby and I will get a little extra care over the last few weeks to ensure that it arrives as safely as possible. Which of course is the most important thing. Goodbye Nutella…you made a pregnant chick very happy whilst it lasted.
So here’s to sucking it up, looking on the bright side (or so my my mum says) and reflecting on the positives with our little bean’s 30 Week Bump-date…!
Packing the hospital bag…Eek! Having never been one to travel light (remember packing for my last holiday and then bringing back even more luggage than I went away away with? Catch up here!) So packing for a trip that you’ve never done before, when you have no idea what you’re about to embark upon is a little daunting to say the least. Having done some research and asked my friends, I pretty much gather that as long as you’ve got comfy clothes and pads to cover just about every body leakage possible, you’re all set to go. Oh and a few items for baby too, of course.
The need for sleep and the need to pee have become arch enemies. It doesn’t matter how tired I am, the moment I change position, so does my bladder. Sending sharp bolts of uncomfortableness to my brain, meaning that there is no way I’m getting back to the land of nod until I’ve gone to the loo…for the zillionth time that night. I seriously think the bladder and the brain are in cahoots and are preparing me for those disruptive nights that are apparently on the horizon. Brilliant.
Seeing the little gremlin trying to escape from my belly…has to be one of the weirdest, but wonderful aspects of growing a tiny human. Now instead of grabbing the Hubster’s hand to feel it elbow mummy, I now give him a little poke and we both sit and stare at my bump whilst it gravitates across the surface. Bizarre…but blooming magical.
As lovely as all these new movements are, it also brings with it a whole heap of worries. You start to rely on these wiggles and thumps to reassure you that baby is OK in there. We’re advised that by now a pattern in baby’s movements should be monitored and then encouraged to contact your midwife if you notice any changes in these patterns. Trying to figure out an acceptable period of movements and the difference between a bout of hiccups and baby giving a Zumba instructor a run for it’s money, can really worry a first time busy mum.
Baby Bean’s transportation system arriving…it took a building a case worthy of a high court lawsuit, along with some serious eye fluttering and promising never to ask for anything ever again (which of course I’ve broken already) for the Hubster to give in and let me order my dream pram. It also helped that the very lovely peeps over Joolz and Baby Planet Online were happy to work with moi and the blog and have teamed up together to kit our little Bean out in an uber stylish range of transportation products including a Maxi-Cosi Pebble Car Seat and the Joolz Day Earth Pram. I was literally giddy with excitement when they arrived and, as any normal hormonal chick would, I was soon blubbering away as we unwrapped the beautiful products. Not long now until our little bean will be testing out it’s new wheels…eek!
