The Renovation Project: The Hallway

It’s been quite some time since my last renovation project post.

We’ve made so much progress on the house in the last eighteen months. But it’s really easy to forget how it once was, and how far we’ve come since we gutted it. Instead, we focus on all of the things we still want to achieve on out never-ending to-do list.

There is still so much we need to finish, which of course, always, comes down to money and time. Both of which have been pretty much non-existent for us since we brought the house. But the Hubster is doing anything and everything he can with whenever he gets the chance.

The House Renovation Project- The Hallway

One area we were really keen to complete before Christmas just past, was our hallway and downstairs toilet. The previous owner had required a disabled toilet downstairs which had been installed in right by the front door. This took up a considerable amount of space and light from the hallway.

So we removed the existing toilet from the hallway and move it to one-third of the old kitchen. This then gave us a really generous sized hallway. Plus a perfectly sized downstairs toilet which is a real asset to the house (and my bladder!)

For quite some time the hallway was an absolute dumping ground. The toilet was made into a storage room for appliances and the interior doors. So with Christmas, last year, approaching we were really keen to get the space cleared and useable ready for guests.

Having this space now cleared and usable has made such a positive difference to our home.

To make the most out of the space under the stairs. We’ve panelled the side of the stairs and made two cupboards. One for winter coats, boots and accessories which saves having to store them up in the loft. I also keep gift wrapping paper and bags here too for easy access, along with our shopping bags.

The second cupboard is our coat room. One side is for us and the other side for the girls to hang thier coats and hoodies.

Aside from finishing the paintwork and the front door and porch. We can now start thinking about styling and adding some decor to both the Hallway and the downstairs toilet. So I’m enjoying collating some gorgeous, inspirational ideas over on my Pinterest page.

Downstairs Toilet Decor Inspiration

I’ve been putting together a few ideas on my Pinterest page for how I’d like to style our entrance area and downstairs toilet.

I’m on the hunt for a circular shelving unit. Or perhaps some rustic shelves to put about the toilet which I’d love to style with some plants and candles. I’ve also stumbled upon some brilliant prints over on Etsy that would be perfect for the wall opposite the toilet.

Our next step is to give our front door a make-over before finishing the paintwork and window sill in the hallway. We will then order a blind from Direct Blinds to match the rest of the house. We can then start to think about furniture for this space. I really love the Hemnes Shoe Cabinet from Ikea as it seems practical and affordable.

Although I’m wondering if it’s better to invest in something more robust and harder wearing. Like the Jali furniture collection from the Trade Furniture Company or the Farmhouse Painted range from the Cotswold Company. The Hallway always seem to take some knocking with shoes, bags, keys and stuff. So it would be more sensible to invest in some furniture that could last.
